Today I managed to successfully complete the tricky NAMT application and send on Possessed to New York hoping, that with our endorsement from Mercury, we might get the chance of a place at the Festival. Tomorrow I shall brave the snow and take that wonderful field walk to Stratford to post the rest of the material.
Above is a picture of the heroine of our musical, Jane Burden, painted by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as Proserpine. For Rossetti the winter of Jane’s life was living with her husband William Morris in London and the summer was there with him at Kelmscott Manor.
Because Proserpina (or Persephone in Greek) had eaten some of the pomegranite seeds from the world of the dead she has to return to Hades to live with him for part of the year. The time she is with Hades is the winter, because Demeter, Prosperpina’s mother, the goddess of the earth, longed for her presence and stopped the plants from growing with her grief. The time Prosepina spends with Demeter are the Spring and Summer.
The snow looks as if it will be with us for quite a bit longer – Prosepina is nowhere to be seen.
